Facilitating the Measurement of Wastewater Levels via Special Level Transmitters

If sewage measurement systems fail, unsanitary sewage will overflow and contaminate the environment, and in addition, the pump of these systems may be damaged due to incorrect operation based on incorrect measurement values. Sewage contains organic compounds such as grease (fat) that adhere to each other to form sediments and prevent accurate measurements. At Newport News, Virginia in USA, for example, the incident contaminated the level measuring equipment and caused it to malfunction. This incident caused the failure of mechanical floats and conventional submersible transmitters of the water supply company of this city. In fact, the fat level of the sewage was so high that masses formed on the level transmitter membrane and blocked the flow of water to the measuring membrane. Eventually, the entire lift station failed due to pump failure!

For the lift station to function properly, the grease must not clog the measuring devices. However, non-precipitated products provided by different manufacturers often cause problems in other areas. In the tools, a Teflon-coated elastomer membrane is used which is weak and can be torn at any moment. So, the membrane features a rather bulky protecting shield that is mounted on bolts. Consequently, Grease will accumulate in the gaps that result from this setup, however, which means the problem will move to another location.

Facilitating the Measurement of Wastewater Levels via Special Level Transmitters

Recently, special level transmitters are designed that facilitate the measurement of wastewater levels. The unique membrane used in these transmitters is more resistant to perforation and abrasion than other non-fouling solutions. As a result, bulky shields are no longer needed (such bumpers result in a compact sensor design). Thanks to the presence of these pressure sensors, the measurement error due to fat deposits is minimized.
