Anemometer Advantages and Disadvantages

Anemometer Advantages and Disadvantages

Anemometers just like any other instruments due to the medium they measure and the environment they are used in can not satisfy all the need with just one type. This issue leads to advantages and disadvantages for every type of anemometer. Followings are the advantages and disadvantages of anemometers.

Advantages

  • High precision during the measurement
  • It provides specific measurements with minimal power consumption.
  • Available in various sizes and shapes so they help in many applications
  • This device calculates multiple parameters such as speed, velocity, pressure, and direction of the wind.
  • Since it is a climate station instrument, it can detect, measure, and provide information concerning the wind.
  • Portable and easy to operate
  • Small structure

Disadvantages

  • The device may get damaged due to strong winds. So they need proper maintenance and protection during installation.
  • Accurate measurement

Wind Cup Anemometer

Advantages:

  • Widely used wind sensor
  • Large wind measurement range
  • High strength
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Cheap
  • Many materials are available, such as aluminum alloy anemometer and polycarbonate anemometer.

Disadvantages:

  • The wind cups of the three-cup anemometer are selected based on experience and experiment. There is no ideal theoretical basis for guidance. So, it is unclear whether the wind cup parameters affect the linearity of the anemometer.

Propeller Anemometers

Advantages

  • Simple operation
  • The entire structure is corrosion-resistant.

Disadvantages

  • Long-term lack of weather data because the associated part of the blade and the fuselage freeze under cold weather and the anemometer can not operate normally. It causes great trouble in the actual weather observation work.

Hot-Wire Anemometers

Advantages

  • Fast response time
  • Operate even at low speeds
  • Portable and easy to operate
  • No special software is needed.

Disadvantages

  • The ambient temperature can easily affect the hot-wired anemometer
  • Its temperature drift is one of the great sources of error
  • Expensive

Handheld Anemometers

Advantages

  • Small structure and convenient to carry
  • No installation is required,
  • Easy to use
  • Low price

Disadvantages

  • The small measured wind speed range causes that data would not show remotely.
  • Battery power needs frequent disassembly and replacement.

Ultrasonic Anemometers

Advantages

  • No mechanical parts
  • No mechanical wear
  • Fast response time
  • High sensitivity
  • The minimum detection wind speed can achieve a few centimeters per second

Disadvantages

  • Complicated installation
  • Expensive

Pressure Anemometers

Advantages

  • High stability
  • Perfect for the measurement of the positive pressure, negative pressure, and differential pressure of the gas within the pressure range of 3000Pa, and also the measurement of wind speed and air volume.

Disadvantages

  • The use environment is relatively single and not applicable.

Tube Anemometers

Advantages

  • Wind speed measurements in confined spaces such as tubes, HVAC, e9.

Disadvantages

  • It requires to be punched
  • Complicated installation
