Special Sensors to Position Cathodes in the Harsh-Condition Process of Zinc Manufacturing

Zinc is produced by electrolysis. During this process, special sensors are needed for positioning cathodes in the electrolyte. However, the hostile environment of zinc production is almost damaging for the sensors. For instance originally, the customers applied plastic sensors, but the vapors precipitated them to disintegrate. Standard V2A stainless steel sensors additionally became brittle after two or three months. Even the high-grade, V4A food industry sensor, which tolerates aggressive cleansing, became porous and began out to disintegrate, offering a threat to the electrolysis process. So special sensors with the capability of tolerating such environment are needed.

A unique kind of corrosion-tolerant steel is appropriate for chemical processes and flue gas desulfurization consistent with DIN 1.4539. Manufacturers produced a model of sensors with all-metal housing in this 1.4539 grade.  They are highly more durable than the previous sensors.

The all-metal housing of the Series 700 sensor preserves its sensing surface against mechanical stresses and seals it against liquids and gases. With up to three times the sensing distance of traditional proximity sensors, a secure distance from traveling components may be warranted, decreasing the threat of collision and enhancing reliability.
