Surface Temperature Measurement

Surface temperature measurement uses optical effects or direct contact to detect the surface temperature of a technical component. Under suitable process conditions, it is possible to infer 
the temperature of the medium inside a tube from the temperature of the tube’s surface with sufficient accuracy.

Surface temperature measurement may be requested by industrial processes when hot surfaces of reactors or pipes have to be monitored and invasion into the pipe or reactor must be avoided. Temperatures of process streams have to be kept under control and regulated, sometimes even without any direct contact between the process medium and the temperature sensor itself in order to avoid any stream perturbation. This method causes lower installation costs and fewer disruptions of the process (flow restrictions, risks of pollution) as opposed to invasive temperature measurement.
