Overload Protection

The devices are built to handle a specific maximum output current. The overload protection trips if this current is exceeded, even for a brief period. Similar effects to overload are produced by capacitors, incandescent lamps, and other highly capacitive loads (such as long leads).

The term “Overload protection” is also used related to pressure gauges. A pressure gauge that is overload protected or overrange protected does not suffer damage even if pressures exceed the upper end of its measuring span. Overload protection is a particular advantage in devices designed to prevent dangerous situations caused by overpressure, such as pressure controllers and pressure switches.
