Counting Packs of Shrink-Wrapped Cartons in High-Volume Packing Process by Long-Distance Photoelectric Sensors

Cartons get packed for shrink-wrapping and palletizing during the high-volume confectionery packaging process.

A machine wraps each stack in a heat-shrinkable film; the stack then goes to the infrared oven.

A non-contact sensor is required with the following objectives:

• Sensing the packs as they leave the shrink-wrapping
• Updating item quantities kept on the factory-wide control system

What type of sensor is the best solution?

Miniature through-beam photoelectric sensors are best designed for this application.

Features of these sensors:

• Dual-unit sensors
• 30,000mm detection range
• Connection to the control system through a PVC-sheathed cable with the choice of an integral M12 connector or a hermetically sealed input
• Far selection of switching frequency through IO-Link
• Quick and precise set-up, even at extremes of the operating range due to a built-in alignment
• Optimal sensor positioning in approximately any situation due to custom-designed mounting brackets
• Reliable detection of fast-moving objects

Where are these sensors mounted?

After each oven, the sensor is mounted on opposite sides of the conveyor.

How do these sensors work?

• As cartons break the light beam, the sensor detects them and alerts the control system to increase the objects.
• Industry-standard PNP or NPN three-wire or four-wire outputs support direct interfacing with modern industrial controls.
• Another output makes an alarm sound if the sensitivity decreases.
